The Technology Advisory Program (TAP) is a great way to learn about industry and business while utilizing and contributing statistics skills to dynamic teams. The TAP program allows you to broaden and supplement technical skills for a few years before focusing into a more specific practice such as Data and Analytics. Fall Semester Math Lab Tutors Needed at Rankin Smith

Rankin Smith will soon begin scheduling tutoring for the Fall Semester and are in need of a few more MATH/STAT/PHYS/CSCI/BUSN/MSIT tutors. You can apply by going here and clicking on the Math Lab Tutor Application link. 

Students would need to be able to work the entire semester, through their students' final exams. Most of their tutoring needs are for MATH 1101 (math modeling), MATH 1113 (pre-cal), and STAT 2000.  They also tutor a lot of MSIT 3000, MATH 1060, and BUSN 4000.  Students are in control of setting a cap to the amount of hours per week they want to work, and they also can tell me times that work for them.  The building is open Sundays 5-10pm, and Mondays-Thursdays 7am-10pm as well as Fridays 7am-4:30pm.  Contact Ashley Gresham if you have any questions.

Summer Workshop: Preparing for Graduate School

The Graduate School’s Office of Recruitment and Diversity Initiatives will be holding two sessions of our Preparing for Graduate School Workshop (PGSW) this summer.  PGSW provides helpful information for students who are considering graduate school and want to learn about the opportunities presented by obtaining a graduate degree. Topics will include finding your program, graduate admissions exams, the application process, types of funding available, and how students can better prepare themselves for the graduate education journey.

 

This event is FREE and open to all undergraduates students enrolled in summer coursework or programs here at UGA.

 

We will be offering this workshop on both Thursday, June 29 and Wednesday, July 19.  Both sessions will start at 2:00pm in room 348 Miller Learning Center and are expected to last an hour.

NASA DEVELOP Program Recruitment

The NASA DEVELOP Program is currently recruiting for their summer and fall 2017 terms! The program offers 10-week paid contracting positions operating at twelve NASA nodes around the US and accepts both national and international participants. DEVELOP is open to current students, recent graduates, and transitioning career professionals who have an interest in applied science. Participants collaborate in teams in a fast-paced, highly professional environment. Teams partner with outside organizations to work on remote sensing projects that help address local and international community concerns while utilizing NASA Earth observations. DEVELOP projects are centered around building capacity in both participants and partner organizations.

Interdisciplinary Workshop for Undergraduate Students: May 14-19, 2017

Description: 

his week long workshop will provide an introduction to applied mathematical and statistical research in the area of astronomy and optimization. Talks will be presented by statisticians and applied mathematicians who work with analyzing data arise in modern astronomical and space sciences research as well as on optimization methods with applications to energy and environment. For a good part of the week, students, in teams of 3 or 4, will use data from different sources to investigate a variety of questions related to several exciting and emerging area of research ranging from the data produced by both ground-based and space-based astronomical surveys at many wave-bands to cosmology, exoplanets, gravitational waves and synoptic surveys. The students will also explore the recent developments in optimization including semidefinite programming, Bayesian optimization and decision analysis, Mixed-integer PDE-constrained optimization etc. Finally, student teams will be prepared to make short presentations on the last day of the workshop, and have the option of having their final presentations reside on the SAMSI website.

While students from universities not in the U.S. are welcome to apply, please be aware that priority is given to students who are enrolled at U.S. schools. Applications received by Monday, March 27th, 2017 will receive full consideration.

SAMSI will reimburse pre-approved and appropriate travel expenses as well as provide food and lodging.

The NASA DEVELOP Program is currently recruiting for their summer and fall 2017 terms! This is a great opportunity for individuals who are interested in practical applications of remote sensing and GIS, specifically in the field of Earth Science. All projects are designed to demonstrate how NASA remote sensing imagery can be used in water resources, disaster management, ecological forecasting, and other application areas to address environmental community concerns. DEVELOP’s projects are interdisciplinary in nature, so applications are welcome from all academic backgrounds.

Applicants must have excellent communication and writing skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. This program is competitive, particularly during summer terms due to high application volume. Though GIS or remote sensing knowledge is beneficial, leadership potential and enthusiasm for applied Earth science projects are strongly considered alongside technical experience. Although the term is only 10 weeks, there are many opportunities to advance through the program to year-long contracts, as well as professional, networking, and technical learning opportunities within each term.

The Graduate Summer Institute offers short, intensive courses in epidemiology and biostatistics intended to develop an understanding of the principles, methodologic strategies and practical aspects of epidemiological research.

With onsite and online courses, you choose the course format that works best for your schedule. Register for one or more courses. You may take courses for either professional development, to enhance your current skills, or for academic credit if you are interested in applying the course work towards a degree program.

Transforming Analytical Learning in the Era of Big Data- An Undergraduate Summer Institute in Biostatistics

The University of Michigan will be offering this full-time 6 week summer institute from June 5 to July 14, 2017. This program will introduce undergraduate students to emerging challenges at the intersection of Big Data, Statistics, and Human Health. Lectures will be led by a diverse group of stellar biostatistics, statistics, electrical engineering, and computer science faculty at the University of Michigan. Working in teams, students will participate in mentored big data research projects. A stipend is available for successful applicants.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and in STEM education.  The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM and STEM education.  NSF especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, veterans, and undergraduate seniors to apply.

Career Information Session: NSA

Mathematics can be more than just a subject in school, it can be a career. The government is the number one single employer of mathematicians in the country. Many of those mathematicians end up at the National Security Agency, where they find careers in research, information assurance, and cryptanalysis. As part of its Education and Outreach Program for 2016-2017, the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) will offer several undergraduate workshops. Students who are interested in pursuing higher studies often find these workshops very useful. See our annual newsletters where our students share their experiences.

Undergraduate Workshop October 24-25, 2016 (Apply by September 9, 2016)

In addition to an overview of current and planned SAMSI Research Programs, the program topic on Statistical, Mathematical and Computational Methods for Astronomy (ASTRO) will be covered in some depth. The workshop will focus on Population Modeling & Signal Separation for Exoplanets & Gravitational Waves (GW) and will feature introductory lectures on statistical methodology for interpreting detection of exoplanets, GWs, as well as using those to infer the underlying population of planetary systems and GW sources.

Undergraduate Workshop February 27-28, 2017 (Apply by January 20, 2017)

In addition to an overview of current and planned SAMSI Research Programs, the program topic Optimization (OPT) will be covered in some depth. The workshop will focus on optimization methods for large-scale statistical analysis and will feature introductory lectures on statistical inverse problems, E/M and M/M algorithms and semidefinite programming.

Boren Awards provide up to $30,000 funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students to study languages, geographic areas (Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East), and disciplines critical to U.S. national security (broadly defined) and underrepresented in study abroad. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Undergraduate scholarships are for 6 to 12 months abroad, and graduate fellowships are for 3 to 24 months in the U.S. and abroad. There is a minimum one-year government service requirement for Boren recipients after graduation. This award is an excellent “in” for careers in the federal government that require skills in critical languages.
