Virtual Open House The UGA Statistics Department annually hosts, via Zoom, a "Virtual Open House on UGA Statistics Graduate Programs." This year's Virtual Open House for potential MS and PhD students in Statistics was held on Tuesday 12/3/2024 from 7pm-8pm EST. Please feel free to view the full one-hour video here. Graduate Programs We offer three graduate programs in statistics, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Master of Science (MS) in Statistics, and the Master of Science (MS) in Data Science. Master's degrees are not required for the PhD program applicants. Detailed information about each program can be found here. Information About Applying to Statistics Graduate Programs Departmental Minimum Requirements for Admission There are several courses that are required for admission into a graduate program in the Department of Statistics: Some basic background in Statistics Some basic background in Computer Programming Three semesters of Calculus (i.e. Differential, Integral, and Multivariate Calculus); and A course in Linear Algebra The above are the minimum requirements for entry into any of our three graduate programs. For the MS in Data Science program, applicants would be expected to have more than basic background in Computer Programming. Similarly, for the MS in Statistics program, more than a basic background in Statistics is required. For the PhD program in Statistics, more mathematical and statistical background is expected, with an MS degree preferred, but not required. Graduate School Minimum Requirements for Admission As of 2024, the GRE is required for admission to all 3 programs. UGA institutional code for ETS reporting: 5813 For international students who are required to submit a TOEFL score: Minimum TOEFL iBT: Overall score of at least 80; Writing score of at least 20; and Speaking score of at least 20 Note: An international student may waive the TOEFL if s/he is from an English speaking country, or if s/he has a degree from an institution of higher learning in an English-speaking country. Minimum IELTS Score Overall Band-Width of 6.5, with no single band (score) below 6.0 Apply Online Apply Online A non-refundable fee of $75 for domestic applicants and $100 for international applicants must be paid upon submission of your application. You must submit the names and e-mail addresses of 3 people who will write your letters of recommendation. The Graduate School will solicit on-line letters from these people. You must upload the copy of your transcript from each college or university you have attended. If you are admitted, you will be asked to send the official copy to the Graduate School. You must have official GRE and TOEFL (or IELTS) scores sent to the Graduate School. You must submit your resume and statement of purpose. Deadlines For applicants seeking financial support:(Fall semesters only) January 1st For applicants not seeking financial support: Fall (August) International: 15 April Domestic: 1 July Spring (January) International: 15 October Domestic: 15 November Summer (June) International: 15 February Domestic: 1 May Note: In general, new students are eligible to receive financial support only if they start in Fall. Applicants for other semesters or who apply late for Fall will be added to a waiting list only if the applicant enrolls in the program. Departmental Evaluation of Applications All applications are evaluated by a committee of faculty members within the Department of Statistics. For Fall semester admissions, most decisions will be announced between February 15th and March 15th. Among the factors that receive a high priority are: The applicant's performance in mathematical and statistical coursework; and What the letters of recommendation indicate about the applicant's ability to pursue graduate study in a mathematical science
