Image: Statistics major Paige Taylor is a recipient of the CURO Research Award for the Spring 2024 semester. Under the guidance of Drs. Abhyuday Mandal and Aditya Mishra, Paige will utilize machine learning algorithms to create epidemic models and forecast epidemic trends. Public health data often exhibits temporal and spatial variations, requiring sophisticated methods to capture meaningful trends and patterns. Tackling these complexities demands the use of advanced statistical and machine learning techniques, as well as the integration of artificial intelligence to extract actionable insights and drive evidence-based public health decisions. The research will use the Long Short Term Memory model, which incorporates internal memory cells to store long term data dependencies while processing new data. Paige will train this machine learning model with data from the H1N1 outbreak, and the capacity to comprehend the spread of diseases will be enhanced. Type of News/Audience: Departmental
