Elise Karinshak, a junior majoring in Data Science and Marketing, was named a 2022 Goldwater Scholar, the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the United States for excellence in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Drs. Yan Jin, Jeff Hancock and Abhyuday Mandal were her mentors for this scholarship.

Elise aspires to a research career at the intersection of data science and AI-mediated communication. As an undergraduate, Elise has researched large language models in public health messaging as an NSF-REU research intern at Stanford's Social Media Lab, and she analyzed information dissemination and alteration on social media at UGA. Elise will be presenting at an international communication conference this May in Paris, France.

On campus, Elise co-founded and serves as co-president of CodeHub, mentored with Girls Who Code, serves as co-president of Paw Print Agency, and is co-president of Honors Student Council. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Palladia, Blue Key, and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunities offered through UGA’s Data Science program. I’ve been tremendously supported to develop my technical and research skillsets through both classwork and extracurricular activities, as well as connected with inspiring peers and mentors with related interests. I am excited to build upon this foundation in future endeavors.”
