The Grimes Fellowship provides academic year support to a graduate student in Franklin College majoring in the Natural Sciences working on the area of cancer research. The winner must be in good academic standing, have innovative ideas, and strong work ethic and a creative mind. Alexei Ionan, a Ph.D. Candidate in the department of Statistics, has been awarded this fellowship for the 2016-2017 school year. Alexei has been developing and evaluating statistical methods in cancer research for over 12 years, focusing on early detection of cancer, medical diagnostic tests, calibrated Bayesian methods, biomarker selection and reproducibility, optimal design of experiments and clinical trials, and statistical issues in -omic data analysis and design, including microarray and RNA-Seq data. Alexei has co-authored nine articles, including work published in Cancer Research and Nature Immunology, that have been cited several hundred times in total.
